‘Treize’ is number thirty-one of a series of about fifty, four ton (Thames Measurement) bermudian sloops built by Alfred Lockhart during 1938 / 39 to a Harrison Butler Zyklon design and market by Captain O M Watts of London as the ‘Z’ Four-Tonner. Although Zyklons were built to order in small numbers by various other boatyards around the country Alfred Lockhart Marine were the first production boat builders in the UK and built the ‘Z4’s in batches. The design was an instant success offering a suprisingly spacious, weatherly vessel with a modern bermudian rig at a modest price. Had the 2nd World War not intervened Lockharts had plans through O M Watts to market more of THB’s designs on a production basis. A good many of the ‘Z’s survive, some have many remarkable voyages, recently a ‘Z’ completed a voyage around the British Isles. The design dates from 1937 and is a modernized version of THB’s earlier Cyclone design. The Z4 although not a metacentroid has a perfect metacentric analysis and as such are extremely well balanced and a delight to sail.
Originally owned by Sir Ewart Smith of Sevenoaks, ‘Treize’ has had a number of owners over the years and more recently has been the subject (2005 – 2007) of much expenditure and improvement with invoices up to £20,000 for professional work carried out over the years. The Z4’s were available with three deck configurations and ‘Treize’ has the full width coachroof and flush deck option giving more generous below decks space forward than the standard version. ‘Treize’ has now been out of commission for several years and will require some re-fitting prior to launching.
