HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

ORDE WINGATE was one of a small number of Admiralty designed naval pinnaces built by Lady Bee Ltd. of Shoreham in 1942. In 1944 she took part in the historic D-Day Landings. After being sold out of service she was converted to a private motor-yacht by V H Haynes of Dinnet House, Hambrook Hill, Chichester, a member of the Little Ship Club. Registered in London in the early 1950s with the official number 186239. ORDE WINGATE is named after Major-General Orde Charles Wingate DSO (1903 – 1944) who Churchill described as ‘ one of the most brilliant and courageous figures of the 2nd World War – a man of genius who might well have become a man of destiny’ Orde Wingate is remembered for his creation of the Chindit Forces who’s missions in Japan during the Burma Campaign are legendary.

ORDE WINGATE now requires a complete refit with work commencing this past Summer under the guidance of a specialist wooden boat surveyor. The copper sheathing has been removed to gain access to the carvel planked larch hull, which is copper fastened to steam bent oak timbers. The deck structure, wheelhouse and aft coachroof are in need of some renovation and the interior has been carefully removed and is in dry storage. ORDE WINGATE retains many original and period fittings and was converted in the Dunkirk Little Ship style of the 1930s.

PAIR 60hp BETA DIESEL ENGINES fitted new in 2018, requiring overhaul and service due to lack of use.
