HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
CAROLANN was commissioned by R G Randall of Guernsey in 1937 for day sailing, picnicing and fishing in the Channel Islands. Designed and built by T Bulley of Teignmouth on a local fishing boat design with curved stem, canoe stern and well portioned lines with a pleasing sheer. Robert Randall (Randall Breweries) was in the army reserve. He left Guernsey before the occupation of World War Two. CAROLANN was laid up in St Peter Port. The Germans painted her grey and used her as a fishery guard boat and history states she took the German commanding officer out to HMS BULLDOG for signing the surrender. Featured in Motor Boat Magazine in February 1937 and in a later issue after commissioning. The family sold CAROL ANN to Clive Robinson of Jersey in 1987.
Built of 3/4 inch Pitch Pine on American Elm timbers. Oak keel, stem and sternpost. 3/4 inch teak deck. 7 cwt iron ballast keel and internal trimming ballast. Bermudian ketch rig sets 249 sq.ft.
March 2020 to 2021 lift out, bottom re-paint with primacon following red lead putty seam stopping. Two coats of antifouling paint. Rigging over hauled, Mahogany sheer planks varnished, main mast 5 coats of varnish, mizzen 2 coats.
Pair 2.5kw 48 volt SEM direct-drive electric motors fitted new in 2004 and featured in Electric Boat Association Journal that year. Two sets four batteries – new June 2015. Two isolators, battery charging unit (2019) 240 volt or generator/inverter. New 12 volt solar battery unit. 240 volt de-humidifier.
BERMUDIAN KETCH RIG – sets 249 sq.ft. plain sail. Mainsail roller reefing, jib furling, Wykeham Martin. Main and jib sheets.
CQR and Danforth Anchors, 25 metres anchor chain and 25 metres anchor warp.
Pair oak beaching legs with bolts and ropes.
Mooring ropes and set fenders.
Rule electric bilge pump. Original 1937 hand pump.
12 volt lighting, fuse box replaced 2017. Radio and handset. Clipper log and depth sounder. Binnacle compass, circa 1910.
Avon type dinghy.
Ventilated cockpit cover, winter cover, main sail and mizzen sail covers, skylight and fore hatch covers.
Traditional interior with port and starboard settee berths having fold down tables. Galley with stainless steel sink unit and fresh water pump. Portable gas cooker . Pantry lockers below. Fore peak with Jabsco marine wc, sail stowage access to chain locker. Large aft cockpit with locker seating. stern lazarette and hardwood steps to main deck.

An attractive and appealing traditional motor sailer with a facinating history. Remarkably original and having the benefit of electric motors and a useful ketch rig.
