HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:
Ironie was designed and built for Arthur Strohmenger, inventor of the modern arc-welding process and heir to the Strohmenger piano manufacturing company.
Designed by Eric French, to a bermudian rigged motor-sailer style and built by the well known boat builders Sandbanks Yacht Company, Poole, Dorset, launched on 21st August 1939.
In the late 1940’s Lord Lyle of Westborne (chairman of Tate & Lyle Sugar and later the Royal Yacht Squadron) became the second owner of Ironie. In the early 1950’s Augustus Newman of Sandbanks became the next owner followed by the designers son Alec French. Peter Breach of Toft Quay, purchased Ironie in in early 1970’s moving the vessel to Dartmouth where she has remained since, in the ownership of Chris Grimshaw from 1985 and the present owner in 2013.
In 2013 a detailed re-fit was undertaken, new Honiton oak timbers were steamed in where required and frames replaced.
