Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this Arthur Ransomes Fred Shepherd Yacht
SELINA KING is a Fred Shepherd designed Bermudan cutter built by Harry King & Sons in 1938 for the author Arthur Ransome. She was the largest boat commissioned by Ransome.
Passing through various owners, she was bought by a gentleman from Bermuda in 1972 who set out to sail her home and was caught in a nasty north Atlantic storm. Rescued by the navy, she eventually made it to Bermuda where she remained for some time before being sold again and cruising to the Caribbean and the States. Found abandoned and in a poor state in Florida, she was sailed back to Bermuda and eventually bought by the current owner in 2011. There started a major refit, culminating in her launch in 2023 at the very yard where she had been built at Pin Mill, Suffolk.
Now after spending a lot of years, effort and money rebuilding the boat, the owner wishes to pass her on to someone who can appreciate the good work and use her properly.
Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this 1967 BUCHANAN VASHTI MK3 – QUEEN CLASS 38
PHRYNE OF BURNHAM is an example of one of the first GRP yachts moulded by Tylers of Tonbridge in Kent and fitted out by Priors of Burnham-on-Crouch. She is rather special and quite a rare boat, believed to be one of only five examples of the Mark 3 Buchanan Vashti (marketed as the ‘Queen Class 38’) still in commission. The Vashti was one of the great Alan Buchanans most notable and successful designs, originally built in wood and raced extensively in the 1960’s with great success. Her classic lines are built for racing and she is a joy to sail.
Launched in 1967, she has a fascinating history and the plans are available in the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth. Bought by the current owners in 2016, she had been through a significant refit at Berthon Boat Company August 2013 and has been continually updated since including new spars and rigging in 2022. Her graceful lines and counter belie a powerful, well balanced and rugged yacht with terrific sea-keeping that is difficult to find in this day and age. This is a proper yacht with performance to match her looks and a class above many GRP boats of her period.
Wintered ashore each season ashore with an all over custom cover, she has been cruised along the south coast, cross Channel and the Scilly Isles and lightly raced through the summer season with a local yacht club (IRC 0.875). Due to her age and design, she qualifies for the classic yacht regattas and has sailed with the Channel Classic Regatta and attended the Paimpol ‘Chant de Marine’.
Survey report from March 2022 states her “to be in structurally sound condition and to be in good cosmetic condition for her age.” Additionally, it states that “For the age of the vessel and the type of polyester resin that would have been used in her original construction the [hull moisture] readings were considered to be very acceptable and much lower than could be expected.”
With a new mast and standing rigging in 2022, and tri-radial cut sails from 2017 with a spinnaker to match, she is ready to go this season and has all the extras you will need for comfortable cruising or amateur racing.
Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this Kim Holman Landfall Class Ketch
Kim Holman Landfall ketch built by Whisstocks Boatyard Ltd, Suffolk, UK in 1958.
She was the first yacht of 6 built to this Kim Holman design and gave her name to the class. Built for Claude Whisstock, the owner of the boat yard, she was therefore the ‘boss’s boat’ and would have been built with a little extra care and attention. Owned by Whisstock for 25 years, she then had another long ownership before being given a major refit between 1998 and 2004.
Bought by the previous owners in 2006 and sailed to Devon where she was modified and prepared for long distance cruising and live aboard sailing. After cruising the West country in 2007, the then owners departed in 2008 for a 15 year cruise, arriving back in the UK in 2023. Their cruise took them south to the Cape Verdes, across the Atlantic to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina before travelling north through the western Caribbean, into Cuba, USA and Canada before heading home via the Bahamas, Bermuda and the Azores. The voyage covered 29,000Nm with over 400 anchorages and moorings.
The boat has behaved impeccably throughout that period and has never gave any cause for concern. She was a comfortable and safe cruising home, easily handled by her 2 crew in all conditions and much admired wherever she went.
Sold in February 2024 to the current owner, refit work was carried out to remedy issues highlighted in the 2023 survey and the boat sailed to her new home in Dorset. Unexpectedly back on the market after only one season due to personal circumstances of the owner, this is a great opportunity for someone to acquire a spacious, capable and comfortable cruising yacht with great pedigree and provenance.
Full survey report available from November 2023 along with a list of actions taken since to satisfy the insurance company.

Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this Laurent Giles Vertue V2
Laurent Giles Vertue No.2 built by E.F. Elkins of Christchurch in 1937.
This was the second Vertue ever launched after Andrillot, built by the well known Elkins yard who became prolific builders of Vertue yachts.
These early examples of the Vertue differ to the later boats that were more common and only 8 examples were launched. They have a slightly lower freeboard, more exaggerated sheer line and a lower coachroof with no doghouse. They are widely regarded as prettier boats than the later sisters, but have less volume inside and only sitting headroom.
The sea keeping qualities of these yachts is legendary, perhaps the most accomplished small cruising design ever built, the Vertue is a superb boat at sea and in heavy weather where they will out perform many bigger boats and give their crew an incredible sense of security and safety.
Sally II is built from excellent materials, pitch pine planking, lead keel bronze keel bolts and bronze strap floors, all of which will ensure her longevity.
Recent mast from Noble Spars and a good suit of sails.
The current professional owner has had the boat for 30 years, cruising first from the Solent around Brittany, the West country and the Channel then on the west coast of Scotland for the last 20 years. A 2019 survey gave her a clean bill of health from a structural point of view.
A very special boat with lots of detailed history, original blue book, builders invoices and associated documentation. She has been on the Lloyds register since new.
Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this Harry Feltham Gaff Cutter
Designed and built by Harry Feltham in 1930.
Major rebuild in previous ownership around 2000. This involved nearly 50% new planking, new deck and deck beams, new coachroof and complete new cockpit. Floors across the centreline replaced in laminated timber to remove issue of corroding metal straps.
The vessel was then sadly damaged by fire after a nearby boat caught alight. The damage was fairly superficial and confined to just one side. Purchased by the current shipwright owner, she was repaired to a high standard, including replacement of all the keel bolts using proper wrought iron.
4 berths with good headroom in a very comfortable interior. Nicely fitted out with plenty of light, this is a comfortable yacht to be aboard. The rig is set up for short handed sailing, including furling headsails and self tailing winches.

Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this 28′ GRP Falmouth Working Boat Gaff Cutter
Built by Cygnus Marine, Cornwall in 1979. The design is that of a traditional Cornish working boat with straight stem, long keel and transom stern. Known as the Cygnus Gaffer 29.
She has a heavily laid up GRP hull built to Whitefish standards with wooden decks and coachroof, to the untrained eye she looks like a traditional wooden working boat with very pretty lines. Her exceptional ballast ratio gives her good stability and stiffness.
The original owner commissioned naval architect Percy Dalton to take the lines from a selected Falmouth working boat. The lines were drawn and Cygnus Marine built the hull, a yard with a reputation for building exceptional fishing vessels. The rig, designed by Dalton, deck and interior fit out were built by the first owner in conjunction with a local shipwright.
She stayed in the first ownership until 2010 when a thorough refit was undertaken with new spars, upgraded and altered rigging, new systems and electrics. The current owner bought her in 2020 and carried out another period of refit. The decks were re-caulked, a new Beta engine fitted, standing rigging replaced and the boat generally brough back into commission.
She has since been used on the south coast and found to be a very well-mannered yacht as her heritage dictates, solid and safe but still rather spritely. She picks up compliments everywhere she goes and has been a great pleasure to her owner.
Classic Yacht Brokerage Comments on this Elkins Centreboard Gaff Cutter
24’ gaff cutter built by Elkins of Christchurch in 1934.
An elegant boat with a clever lifting coachroof to give more space when cruising. Modernised with an electric motor and pod drive to make her easy to use without a cumbersome outboard hanging over the stern.
This is a superb weekend cruising boat with a couple of berths and sitting headroom. Full of charm and pedigree, she is an eye catching yacht in nice condition.
Classic Yacht Brokerage comments on this 43′ Camper and Nicholson Sloop
Camper and Nicholson sloop designed by Charles E. Nicholson and built by C&N in 1951. She was a revolutionary boat due to the method used for the construction of the hull. The plank seams are edge glued rather than caulked and payed in between making her a very tight and dry boat. Her build and early years are well documented in Yachting World articles.
Unlike her later C&N sisters, she is slightly narrower in the beam and with more sheer, making her a very elegant boat with her long counter stern.
In present ownership since 2021 she has had various jobs and refit work carried out to improve and upgrade the boat leaving her now in a good and very smart state, ready for classic regattas and cruising.
Fitted with alloy spars with in- mast furling , she is now a very easily handled boat, often sailing single handed even in stronger winds.
The boat comes with a detailed maintenance log going back to 1995, a well cared for and properly used pedigree classic yacht. May 2022 survey available.
