HISTORY & DESCRIPTION:

The Heard 28 has quickly become established as a modern design classic, incorporating many of the features of the working boats of the West Country.

Percy Dalton was commission to produce a weatherly and roomy cruising design to be moulded and fitted out by Heards of Mylor Bridge on the Fal Estuary in Cornwall. Percy (1906-1982) was a noted yacht designer and artist, combining these skills, as previously did artist and yacht designer Albert Strange to produce an shapely little vessel, pleasing to the eye and with a very capable sailing ability. Percy who spent his working life in the Falmouth area drew inspiration from the local working craft.

In all over 100 of the 28ft version of his design were built between 1968 – 2008. The Heard 28s have become desirable and much sought-after yachts, which rarely come on to the market.

Wild Pigeon was fitted out to a high specification by a Wadebridge shipwright using teak, mahogany and iroko and many solid bronze and brass fittings. Only two shipwright owners from new, the first for over thirty years when Wild Pigeon entered and won many regattas for Falmouth Working Boats. She has been regularly maintained by Tom Boatyard at Polruan and by her current, now retired Morgan Giles shipwright owner.

BROKERS NOTE:

Wild Pigeon is a highly desirable gaff cutter offering all the traditional appearance of a classic boat without the upkeep of a wooden hull. Since the untimely death of Martin Heard his yachts have become much sought-after. The yard, now run by his son and under the banner of Cockwells has gained a wide spread reputation for quality with well over 600 boats built to date.

Wild Pigeon is currently laid-up ashore, only requiring a minimum amount of re-commissioning and hull polishing of the original, well kept gel-coat. Original moulding and build certificates available.
