30′ Norfolk Broads Motor Cruiser

Motor cruiser built in Norfolk in 1931 as a hire boat for the Broads. Details of the yacht have been found in the original Blakes Holidays Afloat catalogue from the period. Major professional rebuild between 2010-2015. Bukh DV36 engine. 4 single berths in aft cabin and saloon. Wheelhouse folds flat to navigate low bridges on the Broads. Well documented refit history and sensibly priced.

30’ Norfolk Broads Motor Cruiser built by Acle in 1931.

Launched as a hire boat on the Broads, references to her have been found in the original Blakes catalogue Holidays Afloat.

Major rebuild by the current shipwright owner between 2010 and 2015.  Worked included the following:

  • New transom and stern knee
  • All new steamed oak timbers
  • Various new sections of planking, approx. 120’
  • New decks, beamshelf and deck beams
  • New stem
  • New aft coachroof
  • Replacement Bukh engine fitted
  • New tanks for water, fuel and waste
  • All new electrical and plumbing systems

Professionally completed refit that has been well documented.  The boat has been nicely maintained since that time.  Currently has a Boat Safety Certificate valid until July 2024.

 

Construction

  • Carvel planked in larch.  All copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.
  • Laminated oak stem new in the refit.
  • Aft deck and side decks made from marine plywood on the deck beams, sheathed in epoxy glass cloth and overlaid with teak planking.
  • Foredeck laid in marine plywood and epoxy glass sheathed.  Low maintenance and totally water tight.
  • Wheelhouse was made to pivot aft for navigating low bridges.  The sides are canvas and the plywood roof scissors aft.  The front windscreens either remove or fold forwards out of the way.
  • Aft coachroof completely rebuilt in solid teak with a sheathed plywood roof.  The design was taken from original photos of the boat so is virtually as it was when launched with 3 windows in the side.
  • Wheel steering with chain and cable drive to the rudder.

 

Machinery

  • Bukh DV36ME 3 cylinder diesel installed in 2015.
  • Shaft drive to a centreline fixed 3 blade bronze propeller.  Shaft, stern tube and propeller new in 2015.
  • Plastic fuel tank of 25 gallons installed new in 2015.
  • 2 x 12 volt batteries new in 2022.  Charged from engine alternator, solar panel or 240 volt shore power charger.
  • 2 x auto electric bilge pumps.
  • Whale manual bilge pump
  • 30 gallon plastic fresh water tank.

 

Accommodation

  • 4 berths in 2 cabins.
  • 2 single berths in the aft cabin and 2 saloon settee berths.
  • Headroom in saloon is 6’6”
  • Headroom in aft cabin is 6’
  • As much as possible of the original interior joinery was retained during the refit.
  • Double varnished mahogany doors and steps down from the wheelhouse into the aft cabin.  Single berth either side with doors onto the aft deck.
  • Central companionway from the wheelhouse into the main cabin with heads compartment to starboard.
  • Heads has a Blakes manual sea toilet which discharges into a 19 gallon plastic waste tank.  Hand basin with manually pumped fresh water from a bronze hand pump.
  • Double varnished mahogany doors into the main saloon.  Settee berth either side with a centreline dropleaf varnished mahogany table.
  • Varnished mahogany locker either side at the forward end.
  • Single mahogany door into the forepeak where the galley is located.  Galley has a Wallas twin burner paraffin hob, with added blower lid to serve as a cabin heater.  Single sink with manually pumped fresh water.
